Taking big money out of politics

I know there are also concerns that Musk could use his financial power to make political donations to far-right parties at the election. One of the biggest ironies is that Reform is surging in the polls but Musk & Farage have catastrophically fallen out! 

Taking big money out of politics by capping donations to political parties and stopping foreign oligarchs from interfering in our democracy is a key Lib Dem policy. We consequently welcome measures proposed in the Government’s Elections Strategy paper published in July 2025 - although they do not go far enough. 

In fact, there is an Elon Musk-shaped hole in the Government’s proposals. We’ll continue to urge the Government to close such loopholes, when the forthcoming Elections Bill begins its passage through Parliament.

The quality of public debate has declined significantly in recent years, with growing polarisation, hostility and rejection of traditionally accepted norms of behaviour. We must work together to unite our communities and celebrate our differences.
