Fixing Our Broken Politics

Too often, the system serves itself instead of you. I’ll always stand up for fair, open, and honest politics, and continue campaigning for proportional representation so every vote counts and every voice is heard.

As your MP and a member of the Home Affairs Committee, I’ve fought for transparency and accountability, challenging ministers & senior civil servants, exposing failures in the Home Office, and pushing for fairer, more democratic policies.

Pushing for Proportional Representation

I’m working with Lib Dem colleagues pushing for electoral reform with the introduction of proportional representation (PR).

I took part in a historic vote for PR with Lib Dem MPs in December, and will keep campaigning for fairer votes where every voice matters.

Trust in politics is at an all time low.

Fixing our broken electoral system, introducing fair votes and making sure everyone’s voice matters are key steps to rebuilding that trust.

HS2 Alleged Fraud

I’m pushing for stronger standards in public life, with real consequences for those who break the rules.

In my statement on HS2 in Parliament, I demanded Tory ex-ministers apologise for their mismanagement of HS2; stressed the need to investigate alleged fraud in the supply chain and claw back any taxpayer money lost as a result; and asked Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander to commit to proper project oversight to avoid a repeat of previous missteps and unnecessary delays.

I’ll keep applying pressure on the Government to ensure they deliver on their targets and maintain oversight as the project moves ahead.

Listening To Your Voices Locally

I wanted to hear from my constituents directly on the Assisted Dying Bill debate, so I brought together residents from across the community, hosting a debate attended by over 200 people.

It was insightful and informative hearing a range opinions on both sides of the discussion, and I'm proud to have overseen a respectful and constructive debate.

I’m committed to holding similar events in future when key policy issues arise to actively engage with voters and understand their views.

Local Democracy

I’ve spoken out strongly against recent moves by Merton's Labour Council to silence opposition voices

Their decision to restrict Liberal Democrat councillors’ ability to table motions and hold the administration to account is a shameless attack on local democracy.

I want to ensure you get the best out of your council, and allowing Labour to make decisions that affect you without proper scrutiny completely undermines this objective.

I’m on your side, and I’ll keep fighting alongside local Lib Dem colleagues for openness and fairness on our council.

My Work on the Home Affairs Committee

I scrutinised government contracts, policy and decision-making as part of the Home Affairs Committee’s inquiry into Asylum Accommodation, to address how taxpayers’ money was being wasted, questioning the Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and the Asylum Minister Angela Eagle

I also challenged managers from the companies providing the accommodation, who are charging the taxpayer millions to provide asylum accommodation while failing to meet key targets despite making excessive profits.

During the Home Affairs Committee meeting on the Implementation of Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse, I questioned Baroness Casey on what it exposed about failings at every level of Government. I asked how we can do better going forward, emphasising the need to give survivors an active role in shaping the system from the bottom up.
