Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson urges Government to protect the bus fare cap and invest in local bus services

The government hiked up the cap from £2 to £3 and the Liberal Democrats called the cap rise “effectively a bus tax”.
However, commuters are facing another blow, following reports that Heidi Alexander has refused to confirm that the universal bus cap on single tickets won’t be scrapped - and will be to be replaced by a "targeted" scheme instead.
Lib Dem Transport Spokesperson Paul Kohler MP is urging the government to protect the bus fare cap, arguing the impact could be catastrophic for isolated communities and those already struggling with the cost of living.
Commenting, Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson and Wimbledon MP Paul Kohler said:
“We’re lucky in London to have an extensive bus service, but sadly this isn’t the case across much of the rest of the country. For years, the Conservatives gutted bus networks, cutting thousands of vital services.”
“Bus services are a lifeline for communities across the country, connecting people to work, education, shops, and vital healthcare. By raising the fare cap, the Government has already placed a burden on those who rely most on public transport and are struggling with the cost of living. Scrapping the cap entirely would only deepen that hardship.”
“Instead, the Government should reverse course and invest in bus networks to support vulnerable passengers and help revive local economies.”
