Wimbledon MP meets SWR, Network Rail and TfL on District Line disruption

Two weeks ago, Wimbledon MP Paul Kohler, convened a meeting with senior representatives from Network Rail, Transport for London (TfL), and South Western Railway (SWR) to demand answers and press for urgent improvements to District Line services on the Wimbledon branch.

The meeting marked a significant step toward addressing long-standing concerns about reliability. For years, passengers have seen responsibility for delays and disruptions passed between different organisations. There is now clear cross-agency recognition that the branch requires urgent investment.

The root of the problem lies in the signalling between Wimbledon and East Putney station. Unlike much of the London Underground District line, which benefits from modern automatic train management technology, the Wimbledon branch remains a technological outlier.

TfL and Network Rail have now confirmed funding to modernise the existing local signalling system. While the work will not constitute a full system replacement, it will upgrade the legacy infrastructure and bring it closer to modern standards.

The work is expected to take place over the coming months, followed by thorough testing, with improvements likely to be in place by early summer. According to the organisations involved, the upgrades should improve reliability, make faults easier to identify and fix more quickly, and reduce overall disruption, with a particular focus on improving operational “readiness and responsiveness.”

A complete signalling overhaul, likely to cost hundreds of millions of pounds, remains a longer-term challenge, largely because of the complexities of operating shared tracks with National Rail services. However, the forthcoming upgrades are expected to deliver tangible short-term improvements for passengers. Paul welcomed the commitment to invest and will continue to monitor progress closely.

Paul had also raised concerns about passenger information during disruption. From mid-June, the information screens at Wimbledon Station are expected to provide more accurate and reliable updates. In the meantime, Paul pressed SWR to make better use of tannoy announcements on platforms 1 to 4 to ensure passengers are kept informed during disruption.

Commenting, Paul said:

“For many thousands of my constituents, the Wimbledon branch of the District Line is far more than just a stretch of track; it is the vital artery that connects our community to the heart of the capital. Whether it is for work, school, a night at the theatre, or visiting family, we rely on this service to keep our lives moving. Yet, as any regular commuter knows, that reliance has been tested to its breaking point in recent years.”

“This progress has not happened in a vacuum. It is the direct result of your persistence. Every email and every message you send me provides the evidence I need to hold these rail giants to account. I will continue to press the Government and transport providers to ensure our community gets the reliable service it deserves.”
